The tomatoes are finally taller than the porch rail. I had stopped measuring them, which may be why the change felt sudden. I kept thinking about the conversation with Mira—how much of a life is made by tending to things that don’t give you an immediate answer. A garden, a friendship, a piece of work. You show up, make a small adjustment, and trust that something is happening beneath what you can see. There is a kind of progress that only becomes visible when you stop watching for it.
